The Norman stairway

The Gradinata Normanna is located in Castelmezzano in the part of the Lucanian Dolomites that surround the town.
On one of the Dolomite spiers a particular staircase of 54 steps is carved into the rock, which led to a lookout post in the ruins of the walls of the ancient castle of Castrum Medianum, of Norman-Swabian origin.

The panorama all around is beautiful, especially from the summit on the highest point of the Gradinata, where the lookout of the military garrison guarded the underlying Basento valley.

In summer it is possible to climb safely, harnessed with a via ferrata kit accompanied by an expert operator.
